Size
|
Size is a large factor in valuing pearls and
has a significant impact on price.
Generally, the bigger the pearl the more valuable it is.
The size of a pearl is calculated by measuring its diameter
in millimeters. Sizes range from 2 millimeters (mm) to 18 mm.
The same type of pearl in sizes up to 5mm do not vary greatly
in price. However, after 6mm each 1mm can
increase the price from 50 to 100%.

Color
|
Pearls range in a palette of colors and shades to choose from. A
key factor in the color is the type of oyster or mussel. Depending on the geographical area there will be mollusks
which produce different colors. The color of a pearl is a matter of personal taste. Some shades are rare and
highly valued, such as rosy white, silvery white and pale gold. However,
the color of a pearl is not an indication of the quality in valuing pearls.. |

Care
|
Cleaning pearls:
- Clean pearls by wiping with a soft damp cloth.
For hard-to-remove film or dirt, use mild soapy water and then
use a damp cloth with clean water to rub over the pearls.
- After clearing pearl jewelry, blot it with a
soft cloth or air dry fully before putting away.
This will prevent the silk string from stretching and loosening
the pearls.
- If you scratch a pearl, use olive oil to gently
rub on the scratched area.
And remember “last on, first off” when it
comes to pearl jewelry.
Storing pearls:
- Store pearl jewelry in a soft fabric bag or a
satin pouch
- Keep pearls stored separately from other
jewelry
- Avoid very dry conditions to prevent
pearls from dehydration
- Avoid direct sunlight exposure
